Sicily itineraries: plan your trip from Catania

Planning a Sicily trip means choosing among several different itinerary types: a classic 7-day eastern Sicily loop, a beach-focused trip on the east coast, a romantic honeymoon plan, an October shoulder-season visit, or a wine-tasting weekend on Etna. The most convenient starting point is Catania: low-cost flights, a central old town to base in, and one hour to Etna, Taormina, Syracuse and Noto.

This section gathers all the multi-day plans we publish. Each one is a day-by-day guide with distances, driving times, key stops and practical tips on transport and timing. They are written by hosts who live in Catania and have actually run each route.

Which itinerary fits your trip?

All itineraries include suggested accommodation, real driving times, and links to thematic guides (Etna, Catania food, Taormina). Have a great trip.

How many days do you need for Sicily?

The short answer: 4 days minimum for a basic eastern Sicily trip, 7 days for the full classic eastern loop with Etna, Taormina and the val di Noto, 10 days if you also want to include the western side (Palermo, Trapani, Agrigento). Anything below 4 nights becomes a “stopover” and loses meaning: the island is large, internal distances are long and a car is always required. With a long weekend (3 nights) you can focus on Catania plus one excursion (Etna or Taormina), which is a different format.

When to go to Sicily

The best months for a Sicily itinerary are May, June, September and October: temperatures around 22–28°C, the sea is still warm in early autumn, prices are lower than peak summer. July and especially August are hot (35°C+ inland) and crowded: not recommended unless you specifically want a beach holiday. April is excellent for archaeology and baroque towns with mild weather; November–March is mild but several tourist services shorten their hours. Avoid Ferragosto (15 August), when locals head to the coast and traffic is blocked.

Why Catania is the best base for eastern Sicily

Catania is the natural base for any eastern Sicily itinerary: Fontanarossa airport with low-cost flights from across Europe (Ryanair, Wizz, easyJet); Etna, Syracuse, Noto and Taormina all reachable in 1 hour by car; Ragusa Ibla and Modica in 1h30–2h. For accommodation, the historic centre (Duomo, Pescheria, Via Etnea zones) lets you walk everywhere in the city and only use the car for day trips. See where to stay in Catania. If you want a central apartment, our apartments in Catania are in three central locations (Etna, Ionio, Zagara zones).

How many days are enough to visit Sicily?

For a complete trip you need at least 7 days (classic eastern Sicily: Catania + Etna + Taormina + Syracuse + val di Noto). With 4 days you only see the eastern side in compressed form; with 10 days you can also include the west (Palermo, Agrigento, Trapani). A long weekend (3 nights) is enough only if you stay in one zone (Taormina, Ortigia or Catania centre). See the 7-day Sicily itinerary for the classic plan.

What is the best time of year to visit Sicily?

The best months are May, June, September and October. May and October are “golden months”: 20–25°C, low prices, small crowds, sea still swimmable (especially October for those who don’t mind 22°C water). September is the best for warm-sea + liveable weather. April is fine for culture and archaeology but the sea is cold. July–August: heat, high prices, queues, parking issues — not recommended unless you specifically want the beach season.
