Taormina: travel guides for a Sicily day trip

Taormina is the most famous town on Sicily’s east coast: a clifftop village with a Greek theatre overlooking the sea and Mount Etna in the background. It’s only 50 km north of Catania, which makes it the most popular day trip from the city — but it’s also a proper destination if you want to base your trip there for two or three nights.

How long do you need in Taormina?

For a focused visit: one full day is enough to see the Greek theatre, walk Corso Umberto, see the Public Garden and have lunch with the Etna view. If you want to also fit in the beach (Isola Bella, Mazzarò) then you need 2 days, ideally sleeping up in Taormina to avoid the climb back up after the beach. Many travellers do Taormina as a half-day from Catania (morning visit + late lunch + return) which works if you start early but feels rushed.

Day trip from Catania or sleep in Taormina?

Day trip from Catania: cheaper, gives you a city base with full amenities, easier for connecting other Sicily destinations (Etna, Syracuse). The journey takes ~1 hour by car or 1h15 by bus/train. Sleep in Taormina: better if you want to enjoy the views in the evening and at sunrise, and if you don’t plan to visit other east Sicily destinations. Hotel prices in Taormina are 2–3x what you’d pay in Catania. For most trips, basing in Catania and doing Taormina as a day trip is the better value option.

Getting from Catania to Taormina

The easiest options are train (Catania Centrale → Taormina-Giardini, ~50 min, around €5), bus (Interbus from Catania centre or directly from the airport, ~1h15, around €9 return), or car (~1h via A18 motorway, toll ~€3). Note that Taormina-Giardini train station is at sea level, you then need a local bus or taxi to climb up to the town. The bus drops you closer to the centre but is slower in summer traffic. Is Taormina worth a day trip from Catania?

Yes, if you have at least 3 days in eastern Sicily. Taormina is the area’s most photogenic town and its Greek theatre is one of the best-preserved in the Mediterranean, with a unique view of Etna behind the stage. From Catania it’s an easy day out by train, bus or car. If you only have 2 days in Sicily, Etna will give you a more “Sicilian” experience than Taormina, which can feel touristy in summer.

When is the best time to visit Taormina?

April–June and September–October are the best months: warm weather, manageable crowds, and you can still enjoy the sea (especially in September). July–August are extremely crowded (Taormina is one of Sicily’s top international destinations) and prices peak. The Greek theatre season (concerts and theatre, June–August) is worth checking if you visit in summer. November–March: mild but quieter, some restaurants and shops shorten their hours.

Where to stay near Taormina

If you’re doing Taormina as a day trip, the most convenient base is Catania centre: 1 hour away by car or train, and a much better value than sleeping in Taormina itself.
